Gleanings is a collection of short stories set in the same world as the Scythe series. After really enjoying the Scythe series when I read it a couple of years ago I was really interested to see where this collection went and what characters it would follow. There were some short stories I loved and some that didn’t capture me as much but it was still definitely worth the read. Some that I remember vividly enjoying were Formidable which follows Scythe Curie, A Martian Minute which surprised me at the end but in a good way and had me thinking, Cirri, Meet Cute and Die, A Dark Curtain Rises and Black Knights Tango. Some I wasn’t as keen on include Never Work With Animals it was quite long and didn’t hold my attention as much, A Death of Many Colours, and Anastasia’s Shadow I just wasn’t particularly taken by what it was about and the point of the story. I would have loved to have seen more of Rowan and Citra instead of just small cameos here and there, and possibly Scythe Faraday as well but I was happy to see Scythe Curie and some of the other characters mentioned in the original series. Overall I enjoyed this collection for what it is and would recommend it to fans of the original series but there were some stories I expected more from. |
