Vengeance of the Pirate Queen book review

I have been working my way through Tricia Levenseller’s backlist and the first books by her that I picked up was The Daughter of the Pirate King and The Daughter of the Siren Queen so when I heard about this book I knew that I would have to read it, ideally straight away but that didn’t end up having for multiple reasons, however I did recently decide to finally read it and loved doing so.

Vengeance of the Pirate Queen follows Sorinda, Alosa the pirate queen’s most trusted assassin, who has been trusted to captain a dangerous rescue mission and when the King of the Undersea is awoken and wants to claim her, she realises just how bad of a situation her and her crew are in.

Tricia Levenseller is fast becoming one of my favourite YA fantasy authors and this was just as good as I anticipated it to be. This followed some great strong characters, some great pirating and a world I love to explore and I could not put the last 35% down.

Throughout the story we follow Sorinda’s perspective which we have not previously followed during the series but she was a character that I loved learning more about and discovering her secrets as we progressed through the story and got hints but didn’t quite know what had happened until it was all revealed. She’s a character with lots of secrets and things that have happened in her past that have a major impact on who she is and why she makes the decisions she makes.

While I knew that I love Alosa and Riden before starting this story I wasn’t sure about Sorinda and Kearan but over the course of the story I grew to really like them and want the best for them. Sorinda was a character who as I learned more about I grew to like more as I understood her more. I started out being unsure of her but slowly that changed and I liked her as a character, and I don’t think that would have happened if we hadn’t learned more about her in the way we did. Kearan on the other hand I liked from the start and enjoyed learning more about and understanding his actions that we saw in the original two books but didn’t know what caused them. I also liked meeting new pirates and characters who we didn’t already know at the same time as seeing many characters who we already knew from Alosa’s crew including young Rosalyn who I think is maybe my favourite character in the entire book.

I loved the pirates and characters as previously mentioned along with discovering more of this world and parts that were previously unknown to both us and the characters. The Alosa and Riden cameos were great to see because I love that they now have their happy ending and seeing them was just great. I love pirate books and this was pirating at its best. Tricia Levenseller’s characters are always well-written and I find it easy to fall in love with them, this being no exception. After how the previous two books rely on each other and are a series that you need to read one after the other, it was nice to read a book that fits more as a companion book and doesn’t depend on having recently read any books to understand it. I don’t think I loved this as much as I did Daughter of the Pirate King and Daughter of the Siren Queen, which was possibly partly due to not being as invested in the characters as I am Alosa and Riden but that has nothing to do with something that could have been improved and more due to my personal preference.

I would recommend this book as much as I would any other Tricia Levenseller that I have previously read and this has just again proved that I need to read more of her books off of my TBR. It is a fantasy book that has me easily invested and wanting to read more which I always love. An easy 4.5 star read and I look forward to picking up a copy of the paperback.

Thank you to Netgalley and Pushkin Press for a free e-arc in exchange for an honest review.

The Match book review

Back in April I was recommended my first Sarah Adams book and really enjoyed it however it wasn’t my favourite type of romance book so when I saw this one had been rereleased and was 99p on Kindle I knew that I needed to read it.  The Match follows Evie who works for a company that trains service dogs to help people with all sorts of disabilities after her life was changed when she got a service dog to help with her epilepsy and when she meets Jacob when trying to convince him how much a service dog would help his daughter she begins to fall for him and his small family.  This was such a light brilliant romance that I just wanted to read and continue to be immersed in the story for as long as I could. I loved all of our major characters particularly Evie, Jacob and Sam (Jacob's daughter). Sam just added the best things to the story and the romance going on between Evie and Jacob. She was also a brilliant character on her own that you really felt for and you just underst...

The Mistletoe Motive book review

I discovered Chloe Liese for the first time this year and have since May read her entire backlist and loved all of them. The Mistletoe Motive was no exception to this and another one I read within 24 hours.  Over the course of The Mistletoe Motive we get to know Gabrielle and Jonathan who have worked together at Bailey’s Bookshop for about a year but don’t find themselves getting along. They have recently learned that the bookshop is at risk of closing though and set a challenge of whoever sells the least books in December has to resign and through this challenge Gabrielle meets a new side of Jonathan that she didn’t expect.  This is a novella of under 200 pages so while going in I knew I love Chloe Liese as an author I wasn’t sure what I would think of it with it being so short and having less time with the characters. However I was not at all let down by this book and absolutely loved reading it.  Gabrielle was a character I connected to from early on in the stor...

It Only Happens in the Movies book review

I have previously loved Holly Bourne books but found that I wasn’t the biggest fan of the one I read in 2024 so was a bit anxious going into It Only Happens in the Movies however I had no need for that anxiety because this book was exactly what I wanted and more.  It Only Happens in the Movies follows Audrey who is over romance after her parents divorce that has left her stuck in the middle, a tough break up and teenage friendship struggles. When she starts a new job and meets Harry, Audrey tries to stay away however she can’t help falling for him even if she knows she shouldn’t.  When I first started I was unsure about the book with the elements of romance however I was pleasantly surprised. Holly Bourne built up a character who I understood and felt relatable. The book had the expected message present in almost all Holly Bourne books which made the story more impactful and me wanting to keep reading to see how things worked out.  All the characters were well-deve...
