Ruthless Vows by Rebecca Ross is the sequel to Divine Rivals, and a highly anticipated release by many (including me).
This series follows Iris and Roman who are connected by their enchanted typewriters during a war between two fighting gods. This is a YA romantasy series that feels like it’s set in WW1, I would say that it is on the older side of YA as there are many tougher topics covered but does still have a YA feel.
We get both Iris and Roman’s POVs throughout the story which leads us to understand what is going on better but you also get to see as they fall for each other. We also get to see the letters they wrote to each other which makes for a fantastic and moving story.
We follow both Iris and Roman throughout the story, we also frequently see Attie, Tobias and a few other characters during Ruthless Vows and many of them also take key roles in the story. I love these characters and throughout the story I was constantly on the edge of my seat hoping for the best for them, as things get tough. The ending is left open for many of these characters but it felt absolutely perfect.
These characters are all so well written and felt so perfect for the story. We had characters on both sides of the war and characters who were just trying to get by. While we do have a strong plot in this book, the characters pull the story and it wouldn’t be the same without them and I do think that the book wouldn’t be anywhere as sad without the great characters who you really care about.
I love this duology so much and don’t think I’m going to be forgetting about it anytime soon. It is such a fantastic story, with some great characters and writing that you just don’t want to put down. The characters and the writing truly are what makes these two books what they are. I felt all the emotion while reading this and that is exactly what I want.
I don’t plan on stopping recommending these books anytime soon and if you haven’t already I strongly encourage you to pick them up. This is a fun YA romantasy story that doesn’t rely too much on the fantasy elements for you to love the story. A five star series all the way that I don’t think I’ll shut up about anytime soon.
